Benefits of Plastic Surgery for the Asian Population

Back

The days of seeing plastic surgery as nothing but a vanity project are long gone. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to correct something that makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s exciting to see people acknowledge and embrace the full spectrum of benefits plastic surgery can have.

What exactly do we mean?

From the obvious to the unexpected, continue reading to learn more about the benefits of plastic surgery for people of Asian heritage.

Improved Appearance

There’s no denying that plastic surgery can make us look better. But what does “better” mean? In this case, better is in the eye of the beholder.

For some of us, better means younger. For others, better means more proportionate, more symmetrical, or more masculine or feminine. Better can also mean celebrating your heritage by enhancing the beauty of your uniquely Asian features. It’s up to you to decide what matters and what will make you look and feel your best.

A Confidence Boost

Successful plastic surgery can lead to increased self-esteem and confidence. Correcting something you perceive as a “problem” (even if no one else notices it!) can make you feel less self-conscious about your appearance and enhance your general sense of well-being.

When you feel better about yourself, you may find that other areas of your life blossom. You may feel emboldened in situations that once caused anxiety, self-assured around people who once made you insecure and more positive in your outlook toward the future.

A Better Social Life

Plastic surgery can’t magically make you more friends or find you more romantic suitors, but what it can do is make you feel more calm, cool, collected and confident in social situations.

Some people who are dissatisfied with their looks struggle with anxiety around others (especially if they have been bullied about their appearance). If that anxiety is extreme, it might lead them to avoid social activities entirely.

On the other hand, feeling content with your looks can make you more outgoing, approachable and willing to try new things.

Expanded Professional Opportunities

Some studies suggest that people who are considered attractive may enjoy more professional opportunities, make higher salaries and get selected for promotions more often.

For example, this study from 2012 found that attractive real estate agents could sell properties at a higher price than agents who were not perceived as attractive. And across multiple Asian cultures (Korean, Chinese, Japanese, etc.), improving one’s appearance is seen as a way to help with career advancement in a highly competitive job market.

While we caution all patients to be thoughtful about their interest in plastic surgery and make sure they are doing it for the right reasons, it is interesting to consider the far-reaching impacts plastic surgery can have on a patient’s life.

New Clothing Options

Many patients feel that their clothing options open up after plastic surgery, especially after breast augmentation. Women who formerly felt self-conscious about their flat chest say their figure feels more balanced, and they love how they “fill out” clothing after their procedure. Shopping can become much more enjoyable when you feel confident in a wider range of options.

We also hear our breast augmentation patients express relief that they no longer need to wear push-up bras and removable pads to achieve the physique they desire.

Unobstructed Breathing

Asian rhinoplasty often focuses on cosmetic concerns, such as augmenting a flat nasal bridge, refining the nasal tip or reducing wide nostrils. We can achieve an elegant, discreet and natural look that improves facial harmony while retaining the distinctive characteristics of Asian beauty.

However, those are not the only reasons to consider nose surgery. For some patients, surgery can improve breathing by adjusting the position of the septum (the cartilage that runs down the middle of those, separating the nostrils). Opening up the airway can also reduce snoring, which in turn improves sleep quality.

Better Bite Alignment

Facial bone contouring can achieve a remarkable range of improvements. The Asian face is sometimes perceived as too flat, wide, angular and masculine. Various bone contouring techniques — including cheekbone reduction, genioplasty, V-line surgery, jawline reduction and double jaw surgery — can deliver significant yet natural-looking results for these concerns.

Some bone contouring techniques can also address functional issues. For instance, double jaw surgery can help correct a misaligned bite by pushing a protruding chin back, bringing a receding chin forward or adjusting the chin horizontally. Double jaw surgery can also help with facial pain, sleep apnea and reduced jaw function.

Improved Vision

Asian blepharoplasty is best known for its ability to create an upper eyelid crease in patients with a single eyelid or monolid. With the crease created, the eye appears larger, more open and less tired.

In addition to its cosmetic benefits, blepharoplasty can have functional applications. A significant amount of sagging or heavy upper eyelid skin can make it more difficult to see. Removing the excess skin surgically opens up the eyes to improve peripheral vision while helping the patient look younger and more alert.

A More Youthful Outlook

In plastic surgery, we often talk about “looking as young as you feel.” Many of our older patients seeking a facelift or facial fat grafting aren’t trying to look like their 20-year-old selves — they simply want to look good for their age. They desire a reflection that matches the energy and vitality they feel inside.

Both men and women are finding that renewing their appearance also renews their spirit. They say they feel more lively and enthusiastic, with a more positive and youthful attitude towards the next stages of their life.
